Current Active Drilling Rigs – August 2025

Over the past month, oil prices have steadily dropped. Prices closed at $70.00 on July 30th. From there, prices fell to a low of $61.77 on August 19th. Prices closed at $63.25 on August 26th.

The August 22nd Baker Hughes rig count report shows a drop in the active rig count. Baker Hughes reports 538 active drilling rigs in the US. In June, the total active rig count was 554. One year ago, the total active rig count was 585.

The oil rig count is currently 411 rigs, compared to 438 in June and 483 one year ago. The gas rig count is 122, compared to 111 in June and 97 last August.

In the major plays, the Permian Basin rig count is at 255 rigs, 16 fewer than June’s count.

In East Texas, the Eagle Ford has 39 active rigs, 3 fewer than in June.

The Haynesville rig count is 40 rigs, 4 more than June’s count.

The Anadarko rig count is 43 rigs, 4 fewer than in June.

The active rig count in the Niobrara is 25 rigs, 7 more than June’s count.

The Williston Basin rig count is 30 rigs, 1 fewer than in June.

The Appalachian has 36 active rigs, the same as June’s count.
