Over the past month, oil prices have dropped and then risen again. Prices closed at $58.55 on November 28th. From there, prices rose to a high of $60.08 on December 5th. Prices then fell down to a low of $55.13 on December 16th. Prices closed at $56.00 on December 18th.
The December 19th Baker Hughes rig count report shows a slight decline in the active rig count. Baker Hughes reports 542 active drilling rigs in the US. In October, the total active rig count was 550. One year ago, the total active rig count was 589.
The oil rig count is currently 406 rigs, compared to 420 in October and 483 one year ago. The gas rig count is 127, compared to 121 in October and 102 last December.

In the major plays, the Permian Basin rig count is at 246 rigs, 4 fewer than October’s count.
In East Texas, the Eagle Ford has 39 active rigs, 4 fewer than in October.
The Haynesville rig count is 42 rigs, 1 down from October’s count.
The Anadarko rig count is 42 rigs, 1 more than in October.
The active rig count in the Niobrara is 26 rigs, 2 fewer than October’s count.
The Williston Basin rig count is 29 rigs, 1 down from October.
The Appalachian has 39 active rigs, 2 more than October’s count.
