Current Active Drilling Rigs – March 2026
Over the past three months, oil prices have begun to climb. On December 31st WTI closed at $57.82. From there, prices dropped to a low of $56.99 on January 7th. On February 26th, the day before US airstrikes on Iran started, oil closed at $65.21. Since then, prices have risen steadily. Prices closed at $99.64 on March 27th.
The March 27th Baker Hughes rig count report shows the active rig count in the US is at 543 active rigs. Compared to 542 rigs at the end of December. US. One year ago, the total active rig count was 592.
The oil rig count is currently 409 rigs, compared to 406 in December and 484 one year ago. The gas rig count is 127, the same as last December.
March 2026 Rig Count by Shale*

In the major plays, the Permian Basin rig count is at 241 rigs, 5 fewer than December’s count.
In East Texas, the Eagle Ford has 42 active rigs, 3 more than in December.
The Haynesville rig count is 55 rigs, up 13 from Decembers count.
The Anadarko rig count is 44 rigs, 2 more than in December.
The active rig count in the Niobrara is 26 rigs, the same as in December.
The Williston Basin rig count is 28 rigs, 1 down from December. The Appalachian has 27 active rigs, down 12 from the December count.
