Current Active Drilling Rigs – October 2025

Up-to-date Trends and Reports

Over the past month, oil prices have dropped and then risen again. Prices closed at $63.45 on September 29th. From there, prices fell to a low of $56.99 on October 16th. Prices climbed back up to a high of $61.79 on October 23rd. Prices closed at $61.31 on October 27th.

The October 24th Baker Hughes rig count report shows a rise in the active rig count. Baker Hughes reports 550 active drilling rigs in the US. In August, the total active rig count was 538. One year ago, the total active rig count was 585.

The oil rig count is currently 420 rigs, compared to 411 in August and 480 one year ago. The gas rig count is 121, compared to 122 in August and 101 last October.

In the major plays, the Permian Basin rig count is at 250 rigs, 5 fewer than August’s count.

In East Texas, the Eagle Ford has 43 active rigs, 4 more than in August.

The Haynesville rig count is 41 rigs, 1 more than August’s count.

The Anadarko rig count is 41 rigs, 1 fewer than in August.

The active rig count in the Niobrara is 28 rigs, 3 more than August’s count.

The Williston Basin rig count is 30 rigs, the same as in August.

The Appalachian has 37 active rigs, 1 more than August’s count.
