Current Active Drilling Rigs – August 2026
Over the past three months, oil prices have trended lower. On June 1, 2026, oil closed at $92.16 per barrel. Prices then dropped to a low of $68.55 on July 6 before climbing to $92.19 on July 23. On August 24, oil closed at $84.95 per barrel.
The August 21 Baker Hughes rig count report shows the U.S. active rig count at 576 rigs. This compares to 567 rigs at the end of June. One year ago, the total active U.S. rig count was 523.
August 2026 Rig Count by Shale*

Looking at the major plays, the Permian Basin rig count stands at 267 rigs, up 6 from June.
In South Texas, the Eagle Ford has 50 active rigs, up 4 from June.
The Haynesville rig count is 57 rigs, unchanged from June.
The Anadarko Basin rig count is 51 rigs, up 6 from June.
The Niobrara has 27 active rigs, up 1 from June.
The Williston Basin rig count is 27 rigs, down 1 from June.
The Appalachian Basin has 37 active rigs, down 1 rig from June.
