Current Active Drilling Rigs – May 2024

Up-to-date Trends and Reports

Over the past month, oil prices have trended down. Prices closed at $78.48 on May 6th. On May 23rd, prices hit a low of $76.87. From there, prices have risen to a high of $79.83 on May 28th. Prices closed at $76.99 on May 31st.

The May 31st Baker Hughes rig count report shows a continuing decline in the active rig count. Baker Hughes reports 600 active drilling rigs in the US. One month ago, the total active rig count was 613. One year ago, the total active rig count was 728.

The oil rig count is currently 496 rigs, compared to 508 one month ago and 580 one year ago. The gas rig count is 100, compared to 108 one month ago and 144 last May.

In the major plays, the Permian Basin rig count is at 310 rigs, down 7 from the April count.

In east Texas, the Eagle Ford has 51 active rigs, 4 less than in April.

The Haynesville rig count is 36 rigs, 2 more than last month.

The Anadarko rig count is 42 rigs, 3 down from April.

The active rig count in the Niobrara is 25 rigs, 1 less than last month.

The Williston Basin rig count is 34 rigs, the same as the April count.

The Appalachian has 38 active rigs, 4 less than last month.
