6 Ways the Staffing Industry Can Support Veterans

Veterans are highly skilled people, and their value in the workplace is clear. Not only are they more likely to have a college degree than their civilian peers, but they are also adaptable and resilient, as well as skilled at working with others and acting with initiative.

It’s important for the staffing industry to take a deeper look at skills-based hiring and determine how we can tap into this pool of talent with unique and valuable skill sets.

6 Ways the Staffing Industry Can Support Veterans

1. Skill Translation

Veterans often have skills that are very relevant but it’s not obvious how they translate into civilian job titles. Train your team to understand how skills and titles of a military job translate to civilian positions.

Career One Stop, sponsored by the US Department of Labor, is a great resource.

2. Resume Assistance and Interview Prep

Veterans may need assistance adapting their resumes for the civilian job market. Help them tailor their resumes to align with the employer’s needs. Assist with interview prep by sharing tips for discussing their military experience in ways that resonate with employers.

3. Tap Into Resources that Help You Recruit and Place Veterans

Get involved with organizations such as Hiring Our Heros, a US Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Additionally, the SHRM Veterans at Work Certificate Program is completely free and open to all. You do not need to be a SHRM member or SHRM certified to earn this certificate. This certificate program will help you learn the value that skilled veterans bring to the civilian workplace, and it will demonstrate your commitment to attracting, hiring, and retaining these professionals.

4. Veteran-Owned Staffing Agencies

If you are an MSP looking to add suppliers to your program, consider choosing a Veteran Owned supplier. The US Small Business Association maintains a database of certified Veteran-Owned Small Businesses.

5. Boost Your Internal Team

A military veteran could make a great addition to your internal team. They are meaningful relationship builders and strong interviewers. They embrace ambiguity and are wise beyond years.

6. Support a Spouse of a Veteran

It can be challenging for spouses of veterans or active military members to find employment, especially if they have moved often to different military bases.

Join the Military Spouse Employment Partnership to post open jobs for this group of talent.
