Glendale
Glendale is the fifth most populated city in Arizona and the fourth most populated suburb of Phoenix. According to the latest estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2015, Glendale’s city population was around 240,000 which was up approximately 14,000 from the 2010 census. Glendale is part of the larger Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro area which had an estimated population above 4.5 million in 2015. The metro area is the 12th largest in the Nation and one of the fastest growing metro areas, increasing by 400,000 people between 2010 and 2015.
Glendale’s economy mirrors some of the top industries in Phoenix including health care, education, retail, and defense. While Glendale may not have any major corporate headquarter offices stationed in the city, they have several sizable employers in Luke AFB (US Air Force), Banner Health System (hospital), Arrowhead Hospital, Arrowhead Mall, Wal-Mart, Glendale Community College, and several area school districts.
The healthcare industry continues to grow nationally, and Glendale is no exception. Banner Health System employs over 3,000 healthcare professionals in their Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, Banner Health Clinic: Family Medicine and a central office. Arrowhead Hospital is another big name employing over 1,000 as well as Humana Healthcare which specializes in mail order pharmacy services.
Higher education in Glendale directly contributes to the bustling healthcare scene with Midwestern University and Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine as well as many area medical certification programs. K-12 education is also a big piece of the education sector in Glendale including three separate school districts which employ over 5,000 educators combined.
Defense is the biggest industry that Glendale has a part of with the main draw being Luke Air Force Base, located about 11 miles west of Glendale city center, which serves as a major training base for Air Education Training Command training pilots. There are over 170 active aircraft on site and a military member population of 7,500 as well as about 15,000 family members. The main notable feature of Luke AFB is its training and simulation range, Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range, which consists of 1,900,000 acres of the Sonoran Desert.
History
Prior to 1880, present-day Glendale was a desolate, uninhabited desert land. William J. Murphy, a citizen of Flagstaff, AZ at the time, joined a team of builders to bring water to the land. M.W. Kales, William Hancock, and Clark Churchill joined Murphy to found the Arizona Canal Co. project and were able to complete the canal in 1885. As the water began to trickle in, so did settlers, and by 1886, central Glendale had a 640-acre fruit farm named Sahuaro Ranch, complete with the main house and 13 surrounding buildings. In 1888, the settlers along with Murphy built the first road, Grand Avenue, which translated to the first residential area of the city. The first school, the Glendale Grammar School, was built in 1895 which drew in more settlers from the surrounding area. With the addition of the Santa Fe Railroad in the mid-1890s, transportation of goods to and from Glendale was mitigated and a connection to northern Arizona was made.
The turn of the century introduced the first bank in 1909, a water system in 1915, and a cattle ranch in the center of the city. The city also became surprisingly diverse with the migration of Hispanic settlers as well as Japanese and Russians from California. The economy at the time was driven by agricultural and food production and included several farms, orchards, the Glendale Ice Co., the Southwest Flour and Feed Co., the Glendale Milling Co., and the Pacific Creamery Co. The economy’s strength was solidified with the beginning of World War I and the rising demand for food and cotton. The boom from World War I created more jobs in the area as well as a subsequent need for housing. More schools were needed to serve the increased population; Glendale High School was built in 1912 and the Glendale Grammar School was expanded into several buildings. By 1940, the city’s population reached over 4,800.
World War II set the United States’ need for increased military forces. Thunderbird Field was the first introduction of defense to Glendale and would soon be followed by the $4.5 million Luke Air Force Base, named after Lt. Frank Luke Jr., the first pilot to receive a Medal of Honor. Following World War II was an adjustment, like most of the United States, however, Glendale’s was focused on creating a city that had a big enough infrastructure to support their vastly increased population. Beginning in the 1960s and beyond, the city added more modern features including libraries, parks, hospitals, civic centers, a city hall, and more necessary items such as a landfill, water treatment plant, and sewage plants.
In the 1990s, much of the retail offerings of Glendale were developed with the addition of a mall, strip malls, shopping centers, and big-name chains like Wal-Mart and Lowe’s Home Improvement. Arrowhead Towne Center is one of the most frequented shopping centers in present-day Glendale and continues to grow. Higher education institutions such as Arizona State University, Midwestern University, and the University of Phoenix all built satellite schools in Glendale which also introduced more sports teams and venues to the city.

The stadium not only hosts the Cardinals but also many big-name events such as the annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (college championship football) and past Super Bowls XLII and XLIX. Other sports such as wrestling and soccer are held at the famous stadium as well. Gila River Arena, located adjacent to the University of Phoenix Stadium, is home to the Arizona Coyotes (NHL) and has been used for the former lacrosse team, Arizona Sting, as well as skateboarding events.
Many notable people have called Glendale home including actress Jennie Garth, former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, legislator Sterling Ridge, and singer Nate Ruess.
