History
The history of Chula Vista can be traced all the way back to the year 3000 BCE through prehistoric fossils. The Kumeyaay tribe who were the first known inhabitants of the area stayed for hundreds of years and still have descendants living in the area today.
During the time of America’s discovery and exploration in the mid-1500s, three Spanish ships led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed in the San Diego Harbor. The land of present-day Chula Vista was part of the Spanish land grant of 1795, named Rancho del Rey. During the Mexican-American War, the United States claimed California however Spain was able to keep the land grant. The San Diego Land and Town Company was allowed to develop parts of Rancho del Rey which would become Chula Vista. Houses were built starting in 1887 and the Sweetwater Dam was completed in 1888 which contributed to irrigation for farming. The town was dubbed Chula Vista which translates in Spanish to “beautiful view.”
Chula Vista continued to grow over the next 20 years with the addition of the National City and Otay Railroad while citizens voted to incorporate in 1911. The city became known for its gunpowder manufacturing due to Hercules Powder Company setting up shop in 1916. During the Great Depression, the city relied on its agriculture market to make it through with the main crops of lemons and celery. When Rohr Aircraft Corporation relocated its operations to Chula Vista in 1941, the economy shifted once again. With the start of World War II, the factory brought thousands of jobs to the city and helped Chula Vista triple its population to over 16,000 by 1950. Following the war, most of the factory workers stayed as well as thousands of servicemen.
With the newly, and greatly increased population, the development of Chula Vista took off. The citrus groves and crop fields were replaced with schools, banks, restaurants, gas stations, shopping centers, and homes to sustain citizen growth. The growth has been fairly constant over the past 60 years and has allowed Chula Vista to claim the number two spot for the biggest cities in San Diego County.
The most recent growth spurt began in the early 2000s with more housing developments and the South Bay Expressway, which connects the 805 and 905 freeways to State Route 54. The Bayfront area is also being developed to create more tourist attractions for the city.
