Torrance, California
Torrance is a hidden gem located in southern California. It is one of the safest cities in Los Angeles County and is just a few minutes away from Los Angeles International Airport. But before you jump out of your seat, let’s first see Torrance up close and learn about the community that is “The City with a Hometown Feel.”
Area and Location
Torrance is magically sculpted in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. It is the eighth-largest city in Los Angeles County, and it covers 21 square miles (12,312 acres) of land, bound by the Pacific Ocean on the west. Blessed with 1.5 miles of pristine coastline, the beach is one of the highlights of Torrance’s tourist attractions.
History
Torrance takes its name from Jared Sidney Torrance, an American real estate developer after it was founded in 1911. In 1887, he moved from Pasadena, and together with other investors, believed in the value of creating a mixed industrial-residential community. They purchased a portion of the Spanish land grant called Rancho San Pedro and hired nationally distinguished landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to develop a new planned community. Architect Irving Gill helped by designing the principal structures of the buildings. The output of their vision and hard work is what we know today as Torrance.
Climate
Torrance delights in a pleasant climate characterized by warm temperatures, sea breezes, and low humidity. The rainy season is from November to March.
Population
In 2010, the total population of Torrance was about 145,000. It is also eminent that the percentage of Asian people is high in the city. As of 2014, Torrance had the second-largest population of Japanese of any U.S. city, with Honolulu just ahead. As the city is home to the U.S. headquarters of two of the three largest Japanese automakers, it’s no surprise to find several Japanese restaurants and other Japanese cultural offerings in the city.
Economy
Strategically located in the South Bay, the city is close to downtown Los Angeles as well as the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. It is easily accessible by the 405 and 110 freeways and from 91 State Highway. As a result, Torrance is often referred to as the location of choice for businesses geared toward progress. Furthermore, it maintains low business taxes and has plenty of business-friendly programs which aid in achieving a healthy environment for business growth. The city’s economic development office knows the needs of businesses; hence, it provides valuable services and information that will benefit and improve the workplace. It also offers business and professional development assistance, economic incentives and an efficient permit and inspection process to businesses.
Art and Culture
The Cultural Services Division, true to its mission of strengthening the city as a distinct center for cultural programs and arts, is committed to expanding the utilization of culture and arts by both touring and local artists, helping them connect their work to the public and cultivate artistic resources.
There are handfuls of museums you can explore that will immerse you in the rich culture of the city. Among these museums that are worth a visit are the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance Historical Society, Toyota Art Museum, California Museum of Fine Art, Chen Art Gallery and Destination: Art.
Local Tours
Torrance will connect you to diverse culture and cuisines and captivating places with fascinating people. It goes beyond just sightseeing: it’s all about discovering and gaining experiences that will surely capture your heart. Besides picturesque beaches and spectacular sunsets, the city offers a variety of things to do for everyone. You can check out a few of the attractions below:
- King Harbor Marina
- Alpine Village
- Del Amo Fashion Center
- The Strand Beach Bicycle Trail
- Madrona Marsh Preserve
Disaster Preparedness
Since Torrance is in earthquake-prone California, the community ensures that they are always prepared during an emergency or disaster. A well-organized emergency program has been built in collaboration with all city departments. This reinforces strong mitigation measures that prepare everyone beforehand on what to expect during and after a disaster.
In a fast-paced environment, Torrance continues to preserve its “hometown feel” while remaining a leading city geared toward excellence.
