Cape Coral, Florida
Cape Coral is a city located in Lee County in Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. It was established in 1957 as a pre-planned community, and by 2010, the population had grown to 154,305.
Cape Coral has an area of 120 square miles, and is the biggest city between Miami and Tampa. With more than 400 miles of navigable waterways, Cape Coral is known as the “Waterfront Wonderland.”
History
The story of Cape Coral begins in late 1956, when entrepreneurial brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen started consulting to snap up land at Redfish Point on the west bank of the Caloosahatchee River.
The early history of Cape Coral begins with the Calusas, a warring tribe of Native Americans, who vanished when the United States took control of the territory. In 1513, Spanish conquistador Ponce de Leon discovered Florida. In exchange for forgiveness of $5 million in debt, Spain deeded Redfish Point to the United States in 1821.
In 1822, Florida became an organized region, causing an influx of residents to arrive. Conflicts between seminoles and white settlers became frequent in the Cape Coral area. The Harney Point Massacre was part of the Seminole Wars. Seminoles battled against the military and settlers in an attempt to keep their lands. The Seminoles were moved to reservations when they lost the battle.
When Florida became a state in 1845, the land was patented to Florida. The state sold quite a bit of its property to railroad companies, who in turn sold the land to different organizations such as the Matlacha Cattle Company, as well as to individuals. One of these people was Franklin Miles of Miles Laboratories and of Alka Seltzer, who got a portion of the land in 1910. He used it mainly to hunt. Wildlife such as deer, turkey and ducks were usually hunted on horseback.
Around then, Cape Coral was known as the “Hungryland” or “other side of the river.” It was populated by fishermen, rustlers, cattlemen, loggers and homesteaders. It was a hard place to live because it was desolate and wild.
This is the land that the Rosen brothers purchased for $678,000 from Granville Keller, Ogden Phipps and Franklin Miles. When their company, Gulf Guaranty Land and Title Company, later known as Gulf American Land Corporation, made this purchase, history of the area was forever changed.
The Rosen’s business office, which is the first building of the area, was built on what is presently Coronado Parkway and Cape Coral, where George’s Auto now stands.
Economy
Cape Coral is the fourth-fastest developing city in the United States, and is pulling in record investment in new commercial structures. Top notch office, retail and industrial space is ready for use.
The city has around 8,000 organizations, including modern and clerical organizations serving worldwide clients. Just about 60 percent of Cape Coral’s workforce is employed in office occupations: administrative support, sales, professional and management positions. While the economy is driven by land and development, the city is home to a few emerging businesses that project growth.
A greater proportion of the city’s populace is age 45 and younger, and residents under 25 outnumber those more than 65. About 63 percent of the city’s populace is of working age, which totals more than 100,000 individuals (2007). Starting in 2007, organizations could select from a pool of almost 500,000 gifted employees from the tri-county community around Cape Coral.
The city has an extensive infrastructure investment that use sustainable growth practices. For example, wastewater treatment and drinking water production recycles water for commercial irrigation systems and homes.
Recreation, Arts and Culture
Cape Coral boasts many of the best recreational facilities in the state. Almost any recreational activity you can imagine can be found in Cape Coral. Water tubing, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, jet skiing and many more diversions will make you feel like a responsibility-free child once more.
Cultural Park is 16 acres of land that contains the Cape Coral Historical Society & Museum, a rose garden, the Cape Coral Art League, the Cultural Park Theatre, Cape Coral Arts Studio and an extensive open multipurpose field. Every facility contributes an aspect of culture, which makes this park unique to Cape Coral.
Cape Coral has about 39 recreational parks offering fantastic athletics programs for all ages. There are miles of scenic nature trails, unstructured exercise trails and open green space. There are also resorts, community festivals, three golf courses and even a water park.
Quality of Life
Cape Coral offers personal satisfaction with affordable real estate, great health services and a low cost of living. The city is home to recreation networks, extensive parks and progressive education facilities. Cape Coral has 27 miles of shoreline and more than 400 miles of sparkling canals.
The cost of houses is among the lowest in the state and country, which complements one of the lowest crime rates in the country. The plentiful waterways offer boaters access to the Gulf of Mexico by means of the Matlacha Pass estuary and the excellent Caloosahatchee River. The city is home to a plethora of eco-adventures, world-renowned regional beaches, trophy-level fishing and unparalleled natural beauty.
Great health care: with a 291-bed acute-care facility, Cape Coral Hospital is consistently named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country. The 220,000-square-foot Lee County VA Healthcare Center serves around 1,000 veterans every day.
