History
Indiana means “Land of Indians.” Prior to becoming a state in 1816, Indiana was home to numerous indigenous people and Native Americans. Angel Mounds, located in Evansville, is one of the most well-preserved Native American sites in all of North America.

- Levi Coffin, also known as the “President of the Underground Railroad,” was involved in the Underground Railroad system which helped slaves escape during the 1800s.
- Lewis and Clark left from Fort Vincennes on their exploration to explore the Northwest Territories.
- Although he wasn’t born in Indiana, Abraham Lincoln moved to Indiana when he was seven. He spent most of his childhood in Spencer County.
- On May 30, 1911, the first long-distance automobile race in the United States was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The winner’s average speed was about 75 miles per hour and the prize was $14,000. (Today, the average speed is more than 167 miles per hour and the prize is typically more than $1.2 million.)
- During World War II, the 9-47 fighter-plane was manufactured in Evansville.
- Singer Michael Jackson, along with his siblings with whom he would later form the Jackson 5, was born and raised in Gary, Indiana.
