Newark, Newark!
For those who have a sweet tooth, Newark should always be in their minds. Why? Two things: M & M’s and Oreos. The chocolate with the colorful shells and the cream-filled cookie were first produced in this city. Aside from these beloved treats, delicious food must be everywhere in the biggest city of New Jersey because it is considered as the dining capital of the world.
Nicknames
The city has two nicknames: The Brick City and The Gateway City. The first one is because of the high-rise housing buildings that were made of brick and concrete that were so numerous during the city’s past. The second one has to do with four imposing commercial structures just west of Newark Penn Station.
History
Founded in 1666 by Puritans and intended to be a religious site, the city got its name from a town in England called Newark-on-Trent. The city’s name itself can be traced to religious beliefs. It can mean the New Ark or the New Work. In 1798, it was one of New Jersey’s towns and on April 11, 1836, it became a city. In 1826, the population was just over 8000. By the end of the century, it was 246,000.
During the early 19th century, improvements on the manufacture of leather were the reason that Newark first became an exciting city, economically. Seth Boyden patented a way of producing leather and manufactured it from Newark, even if he was originally from Massachusetts. This leather became so popular in the country that it provided so much income to the city and also gave many people so much jobs.
In the same century, the Morris Canal was also built. It was a boom for transportation and it made possible for Newark to reach the New Jersey hinterland and thus access its resources, like iron and its farm produce.
Later, railroads were built in the area. This meant a better means of transportation compared to the ones that can carry passengers through the Morris Canal. This resulted into a shipping business that caused Newark to be the economic center in all of New Jersey.
The plastic called Celluloid was produced in the city in the middle of the 19th century. This plastic was versatile. It can be found in carriages, dentures, piano keys and eye glass frames, among so many others. This invention by John Wesley Hyatt was even enhanced much later for use in movies. It sold well and further bolstered Newark’s already formidable economy. Other scientific breakthroughs in this century include improved arc lamps and the stock ticker by no less than the great Thomas Edison himself.
Later in the 19th century came the Germans who escaped the political turmoil in their country at this time. They brought to Newark their breweries and their newspapers.
Early 20th century saw Newark as a busy city. It was bustling with commerce and entertainment. The department stores alone attracted a lot of visitors. Merchants were so proud of their merchandise. Among the popular stores then were Hahne & Company and Bamberger’s. There were also many theatres, movie houses and nightclubs. Traffic became a problem that the old bed of Morris Canal was turned into a subway, the Newark City Subway. The intersection between Broad and Market streets became known to be the busiest in the country.
After the Depression and World War II, the city experienced some problems. Tax rates were increased. City government budget was cut. There were people criticizing the housing units, citing sanitation issues. The Federal Housing Authority also refused loans or loan extensions to much of the residents of these housing units. Constructions of new highways also displaced a number of people.
Commercial buildings were still built, though. The city government convinced some companies to build buildings. These include those built by Mutual Benefit and prudential. Port Newark was also built after the war. Campuses, like that of Seton Hall and Rutgers-Newark, were expanded.
Despite these efforts, problems persisted. The jobless continued to rise in number. A housing project called Christopher Columbus Homes which were meant to be multi-racial did not solve the housing problem at all. It was eventually torn down in the 1980s because of vacancy.
This economic misfortune turned to unrest which probably led to the much publicized riot in 1967. Newark was nowhere its glory days prior to the war. And was considered one of the worst cities in the US during the 70s.
A renaissance came early in the 90s. Housing was now improved. Prestigious cultural venues like the New Jersey Performing Arts Center were built downtown. Riverfront Stadium was built. The Lincoln Park and the Coast were areas were care for environment was emphasized which made its houses livable.
By the new millennium, Newark regained its reputation as a major city in the country.

Newark Liberty International Airport, Verizon Communications, Prudential Financial Inc., University of Medicine/Dentistry, and Continental Airlines are the top job providers of the city.
Nurses, elementary school teachers, accountants and editors, sales representatives, and high school teachers are the most popular jobs among those with college degrees.
Retail salesperson, cashiers, janitors, secretaries, and office clerks are the most popular among those who do not have college degrees.
