Corpus Christi, Texas

Located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in southern Texas, Corpus Christi is known as the “Sparkling City by the Sea.” Corpus Christi has a population of over 320,000 people, making it the eighth largest city in Texas.

History

Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney established the area of present day Corpus Christi as a trading post in the late 1830s. The area was known as Kinney’s Ranch or Kinney’s Trading Post until the establishment of a post office in 1847, when the name became Corpus Christi, meaning “Body of Christ” in Latin. The settlement was fairly remote until 1845, when General Zachary Taylor brought his troops there to prepare for a war with Mexico. Corpus Christi was officially incorporated in 1852 and was the site of the Battle of Corpus Christi during the American Civil War. In 1919, Corpus Christi was hit by a powerful hurricane, which killed hundreds of people and did major damage to infrastructure. After the hurricane, business owners and residents rallied to the city to build a deepwater port to help reinvigorate the economy. They succeeded and Port Corpus Christi was completed in 1926. The completion of the port led to a significant increase in the population over the next ten years and, since then, Port Corpus Christi has become one of the largest ports in the nation. Currently, the port directly provides over 13,700 jobs to the workforce and indirectly supports twice that amount. Port Corpus Christi also generates $15.2 billion of total economic activity for the state of Texas each year, with $1.7 billion in direct business revenue. Although talk of building a seawall to protect the city also came shortly after the hurricane, a seawall wasn’t built until 1941. In addition to Port Corpus Christi, the seawall is now one of the distinguishing characteristics of the city.

Military

Corpus Christi has a significant military presence, as it is home to the Naval Air Station (NAS) Corpus Christi, the Corpus Christi Army Depot and the United States Coast Guard/Air Station Corpus Christi. NAS Corpus Christi is one of the largest employers in the city, directly providing over 8,000 jobs to the workforce. The military is a significant contributor to the economy, not only in Corpus Christi, but also in the state of Texas. NAS Corpus Christi contributes more than $2 billion to the Texas economy and the Corpus Christi Army Depot contributes another $2.5 billion.

Petrochemical

Factoring Companies in Corpus ChristiAlthough Corpus Christi has felt the effects of the downturn in the oil prices, the city’s economy is diversified enough that some of the negative effects have been offset by increases in other sectors, primarily the service sector. In addition, because of the combination of the low price of natural gas and the increase in production due to new technologies, the petrochemical industry has been able to see a significant amount of growth. In fact, along with Houston, Corpus Christi is home to the majority of petrochemical plants in Texas. Of the over 200 planned projects in the United States, Texas accounts for almost half of them. More than 60 percent of these projects are being funded by foreign investment as global chemical demand has increased and is expected to double in the next 20 years. Corpus Christi will be one of the leading exporters as the city’s deepwater port facilities make it convenient to export to other countries.

Tourism

Tourism is a major sector for the economy of Corpus Christi. In fact, the industry contributes over $1.2 billion a year into the economy and has been steadily growing since 2003. Aside from its beautiful scenery and proximity to the coast, Corpus Christi is home to a number of attractions from the Texas State Aquarium to a variety of museums. One of the most popular museums in Corpus Christi is the USS Lexington Museum, which acted as part of the set for the 2000 film Pearl Harbor. The city receives more than 8 million visitors each year, many of which are for leisure-based activities and family vacations. Recently, Corpus Christi has also seen an increase in tourism for nature and wildlife and it accounts for more than 45 percent of all visitor trips. A significant amount of the visitors that come to Corpus Christi come from within the state. In fact, more than 84 percent of the tourists to the city are Texas residents. The industry directly employs over 17,000 people and accounts for five percent of local business activity. Indirectly, tourism supports an additional 29,000 jobs.
