Arlington, Virginia
Located across the Potomac River from Washington D.C., Arlington is a 26-square mile county in Virginia. Arlington County is unique in the fact that, unlike most other counties in the United States, Arlington has no towns or cities within its borders. As such, the government of Arlington has the functions of both a city and a county government.
History
The area of present day Arlington County was once known as Alexandria County. In the late 1700s, Virginia donated Alexandria County to the government of the United States in order to create the new federal capital district. Alexandria County remained a subdivision of the District of Columbia until 1846, when it was returned to Virginia at the request of the residents and after deciding that the federal district didn’t require the additional land. After the Civil War, the City of Alexandria and Alexandria County separated. To avoid the confusion between the two, Alexandria County was renamed Arlington County in recognition of Arlington House, the home of Robert E. Lee. During World War II the population almost doubled, as Arlington housed many military and government workers involved in the war effort. This population increase became permanent when the Pentagon opened in Arlington in 1943. Today, Arlington has the highest population density of any county in Virginia. Additionally, it is one of the most educated counties in the nation, with over 72 percent of its residents holding a bachelor’s degree or higher. Arlington also has one of the lowest unemployment rates of any county in the United States and the highest median family income in the nation.
Government
With its proximity to Washington D.C., it is fitting that the government accounts for the largest portion of the economy of Arlington. In fact, the government employs 23 percent of the labor force in the county. Arlington is home to the headquarters of a number of departments of the federal government of the United States, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Additionally, the Department of Defense (DoD), which is housed at the Pentagon, supplies about 26,000 jobs to the labor force, making it the largest employer in the county. At 28.7 acres, the Pentagon is one of the largest office buildings in the world and has been assigned five different zip codes. The Pentagon acts as its own little city, with a mini shopping mall, more than 20 fast food restaurants, an athletic center, and a meditation and prayer room.
Service Sector
Arlington has begun to diversify its economy in an effort to lessen its reliance on the government. As such, professional and technical services have become an increasingly important sector for Arlington. In fact, it is estimated that the service sector now provides 21 percent of the jobs in the county. Many of the companies within this sector are professional service companies, including Deloitte, an auditing, consulting, tax and advisory service company; Accenture, a global professional services company; and Booz Allen Hamilton, a strategy and technology consulting firm. These firms, along with Leidos, Lockheed Martin and Corporate Executive Board, are some of the top employers in Arlington.
Tourism
Arlington’s economy also benefits from a very successful tourism industry. In 2015, tourism generated $3.06 billion in local travel spending, which accounted for more than 13 percent of the total spending in the county and generated $86 million in local tax receipts. This industry also provides approximately 26,000 jobs to the Arlington labor force and has helped to support and increase revenues in other industries, including retail, food, and construction. With the recent opening of a brand new hotel, the Hyatt Place Arlington/Courthouse Plaza, Arlington now has 44 hotels with more than 11,000 available rooms. Additionally, hotel rooms in Arlington tend to be slightly less expensive than those in Washington D.C., making it a great alternative for tourists, since Arlington has a wealth of public transportation options that make it easy to get to the capital. Tourists are drawn to Arlington because of its rich historical sites, including a number of museums and national memorials. The Pentagon is also an attraction for tourists, however tours were suspended after the attacks on September 11, 2001. Currently, more limited tours are available with reservations made 14-90 days in advance.
