Newport News, Virginia

Newport News is located on the southeastern end of the Virginian Peninsula, and is part of Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The city is on the border of the Atlantic Ocean, which makes it a great tourist destination. The total area covered by the city is 120 square miles.

History of the City

The city was conquered by English settlers in the early 1600s, and eventually restored after the Civil War with the help of Collis P. Huntington. Later, the city developed several railroads for the transport of coal, shipbuilding materials and warship business.

The city was founded in 1896. Prior to settling on the name Newport News, it has had several different names, including: Warwick River Shire, Warwik Country, Warwick City and Elizabeth Cittie.

Art and Culture:

The people of this region have developed a Tidewater accent rather than the usual southern accent. The prolong pronunciation of vowels gives the accent a unique sound.

In September 2005, the Ferguson Center for the Arts opened on the campus of Christopher Newport University. The center contains three concert halls: the Concert Hall, the Music and Theater Hall and the Studio Theater.
