Denver
Denver, Colorado is located at the base of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Denver’s population of roughly 682,000 people makes it the 19th largest city in the United States, a mid-sized metropolis enjoying its biggest growth spurt in over 25 years, and a recent study found it to be the fastest growing city in America. This could be from any number of factors that make Denver an attractive place to live. For naturists, the proximity to the mountains means Denver is an ideal place for those that love to hike and ski. There are several museums and attractions for those interested in art and history. There is a blossoming food and music scene making it a new go-to destination for nightlife. If you’re looking to visit an up-and-coming city, Denver has to be on your radar.
History
On November 22, 1858, during the Pikes Peak gold rush, a land speculator named General William Larimer staked a claim on the bluff overlooking the meeting place of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. He named his new settlement Denver, in hopes of gaining favor with Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. Unbeknownst to Larmier though, Governor Denver had already resigned from office by the time he made the claim, yet the name stuck. At the time, Denver was actually one of three gold towns in close proximity to each other that would all eventually become modern-day Denver. One year after its inception in 1859, the names of the other two cities were dropped in exchange for a shared barrel of whiskey amongst the town leaders and the rest is history. Today, it’s known as the Mile High City because the 13th step of the Colorado State Capitol building is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level – one mile exactly.
Geography
While many people picture Denver as being located in the mountains, that’s technically not true. The city of Denver sits on gentle rolling plains, about twelve miles east of the foothills, a series of small mountains that cap at 11,000 feet. Beyond that are the famous Rocky Mountains, whose striking peaks rise a stunning 14,000 feet. Since Denver is so close to these mountains, it ranks as number six nationally in the number of ski areas. It’s at these resorts that guests can hit the bunny slopes if they’re new to the sport, or try out a black diamond if they’re feeling confident. Denver is also great for those who are looking to do some hiking in the warmer months. There are over 30 trails and many beautiful waterfalls to visit, all within a 30-minute driving distance of downtown. Adventurous tourists can go kayaking, paddle boarding, ride a paddle boat, or even take a hot air balloon ride and take in the scenic vistas.
Recreation
Denver also has plenty of things to do within the city limits. The Downtown Aquarium is a massive aquatic complex that houses over 500 species in addition to a fantastic restaurant and lounge. Here, guests can see tanks full of eels, sharks, piranhas, and other wonders of the ocean. The Aquarium is divided into nine parts, each focusing on a different area and the creatures that inhabit it: North America, In the Desert, Under The Sea, At the Wharf, the Rainforest, Coral Lagoon, Sunken Temple, and Shipwreck. No trip here would be complete without a meal at the Aquarium restaurant. Diners are seated around a massive 50,000-gallon floor-to-ceiling centerpiece aquarium with over 100 species of fish from the Caribbean Sea, Hawaii, the South Pacific, and the Indian Ocean. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see divers hop in and perform one of the twice-daily feedings.
Not too far away, the Denver Zoo is 80 acres of animal exhibits and educational facilities. The zoo has 4,125 specimens representing 613 unique species. Guests can walk the loop of exhibits and see animals from all over the world including primates, elephants, big cats, birds, reptiles and fish. The highlight of the zoo has to be the animal encounters. The Denver Zoo offers “meet and greets” with some of its most popular animals, allowing guests to feed, pet, and interact with rhinos, elephants, seals, hippos, penguins, orangutans, and lorikeets. Fun fact: the Denver Zoo was the first to use naturalistic enclosures instead of cages with bars and has been named the Greenest Zoo in the country by the World’s Renewable Energy Forum.
Denver also has several museums for those looking to learn some history or do some art appreciation. The Denver Art Museum is an ultra-modern facility that is known for its extensive collection of indigenous art. Art lovers can take in exhibits like “Women in Expressionism” and “Rhythm and Roots,” which show how artists and photographers captured and contributed to the art of dance from the 1830s up to 1960s. Denver is also home to famed Titanic survivor and philanthropist Molly Brown, whose house has been turned into a museum that attracts over 50,000 visitors a year. Although Brown was best known for surviving the horror of the Titanic, her contributions to the world were much greater than that: she was a leader for women’s suffrage, advocated for raising the minimum wage, led relief efforts during World War I, and eventually earned the French Legion of Honor for her contributions. The Molly Brown Museum takes her Denver residence and uses it to commemorate her achievements as well as inspire the youth of today to aspire to similar heights.
Economy
The economy of Denver is as rich and diverse as those who call it home. Being the largest city in a fossil fuel and mineral-rich area means Denver is home to a number of mining, oil, and energy companies: Newmont Mining, Western Gas Resources, and Patina Oil and Gas all have headquarters here. The aerospace industry also has a significant presence in Mile High City, particularly ones that are frequently used as contractors for the federal government. Lockheed Martin specifically keeps a strong presence in the city. In fact, since Denver is the capital of Colorado, there are many people employed by departments of the city, state, and federal governments. Denver’s unique location of being a mile above sea level and at the 105th meridian makes it an ideal hotspot for the telecommunications industry. Its “one bounce” real-time satellite uplink allows communication to six continents in the same business day. Because of this, Verizon, CenturyLink, and EchoStar are just a few of the communications companies with offices here. Just outside the city proper, Denver has a booming agricultural economy. Farmers and ranchers from the area receive average payments per year from the federal government totaling roughly $316 million, including wheat, corn, dairy, and livestock subsidiaries.
Denver is a hub of travel, tourism, and business for good reason, and it didn’t become the fastest growing city in America overnight. This cultural and professional hotspot continues to attract people from all over the world to enjoy its incredible natural beauty, amazing parks and museums, and non-stop urban development. Tourists owe it to themselves to make Denver not just a stopover from one coast to the other. This is a city that deserves to be a destination all on its own. Who knows, you may become one of the 50 people that move there every single day.
