Bismarck, ND

Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota and the city with the second-largest population in the state after Fargo. The Bismarck metro area has around 130,000 residents and counting; the city is ranked as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Founded in 1872 by European Americans on the Missouri River, Bismarck has been the capital city of North Dakota since 1889. The city sits across the river from Mandan, which is named for a historic local Native American tribe. Bismarck is home to the tallest building in the state, the North Dakota State Capitol. The city of Bismarck has developed around the downtown area. It is unique in that the major shopping center, Kirkwood Mall, sits in the center city instead of the suburbs. There are several other major retail stores nearby and two hospitals. Stores and restaurants line the streets.

Bismarck is situated in the middle of the Great Plains and has a variable four-season climate. Winters here are cold, moderately snowy, and windy, and summers are hot and sometimes humid. During spring and summer, thunderstorms are common, but the rest of the year is mostly dry.

History

Indigenous peoples have inhabited central North Dakota for thousands of years. Long before Europeans arrived, the Mandan Native American tribe lived here. These people spoke the Hidatsa language. In 1872, a settlement was founded by European Americans at what was called Missouri Crossing, named this because on their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark expedition crossed the river here. The new town was later called Edwinton, named for the engineer-in-chief for the Northern Pacific Railway, Edwin Ferry Johnson. The construction of the railroad in the area drew settlers and workers.

In 1873, the city was renamed as Bismarck by the Northern Pacific Railway in honor of Otto von Bismarck, the German chancellor. Railroad officials hoped that the name might help attract German immigrants to the area as well as German railroad investment. The following year, the discovery of gold in the Black Hills of South Dakota brought about even more growth. Miners came to the area by the thousands, encroaching on a territory the Lakota considered sacred and causing tension with the Native Americans. Bismarck quickly became a freight-shipping center on the “Custer Route.” The city was designated as the capital of the Dakota Territory in 1883, and in 1889 as the capital of the new state of North Dakota.

Economy

In the last few years, North Dakota has been experiencing a very large economic boom thanks to increased activity in the Bakken formation. This boom has benefitted Bismarck greatly. Unemployment rates are low and the pace of the oil boom, although slowing, is still expanding rapidly. There is a wide variety of cultural events and activities to enjoy in Bismarck. The Bismarck Arts & Galleries Association works to stimulate the presentation and study of the visual arts and focuses on expanding residents’ and visitors’ appreciation and participation as well as preserving the local heritage. One thing not to miss is the Bismarck Urban Harvest, an open-air arts and entertainment market designed to support the city’s economy and provide a community city center in the downtown area. There are also musical events and performances, such as those done by the Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus. The Missouri Valley Historical Society for Preservation has moved actual buildings dating from 1875 to 1935 here and now offers educational tours of these unique buildings. In Bismarck, you can also visit the North Dakota Heritage Center, which displays exhibits on everything from prehistoric times to the present day. Sightseeing

If you’re visiting the area and you would like to spend an afternoon (or a few days) sightseeing, there are plenty of options. When the weather is nice, it’s easy to get outdoors. Bismarck is home to a large park system and a large network of walking, running, and biking trails. The Bismarck Parks and Recreation District was established in 1927 and operates numerous parks, golf courses, and swimming pools throughout the city. Sertoma Park stretches over three miles along the banks of the river and contains several miles of exercise trails as well as the Dakota Zoo, which houses over 600 animals and offers educational experiences and plenty of scheduled events. Alternatively play a round of golf on one of five courses: Hawktree Golf Club, Apple Creek Country Club, Riverwood Golf Course, Tom O’Leary Golf Course, or Pebble Creek Golf Course.

A popular tourism attraction here is the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. This park sits seven miles south of Mandan and contains the partially reconstructed Fort Abraham Lincoln. Here you can also find On-a-Slant Village, a rebuilt earth lodge village once occupied by members of the Mandan tribe. During the summer, guided tours of both sites are available, and there are also nature trails, campgrounds, and a museum on park history. Enjoying parks isn’t limited to warm weather; in 2007, Bismarck broke the record for the most snow angels made in one place. Almost 9,000 participants were present for the event.

Hunting and fishing are also popular in Bismarck, and there are hunting seasons for waterfowl, pheasant, and deer. Fishing is popular year-round on the river, where there are plenty of public docks. There are also several lakes near the city, including Harmon Lake, McDowell Dam Lake, and two other lakes within several miles of Bismarck.

If you’d rather stay indoors, consider a visit to the Gateway to Science, a hands-on science center offering programs such as after-school science clubs, science seminars, and summer camps. Or take a stroll through the Former Governors’ Mansion, which provides a glimpse into the life of a 19th-century governor. Or if shopping is your thing, you can find plenty of it at the Kirkwood Mall, the second-largest mall in the state.
