Yonkers, New York
With a span of 20.3 square miles and a population of 200,667 (as of 2014), Yonkers is the most populous city in Westchester County, and it is New York’s fourth most populous city. It is about two miles away from Manhattan’s northernmost point. Once a small farm town, Yonkers has become home to many businesses of different sizes, including large corporations, innovators, inventors and a diverse set of ethnic communities.
History
The area called Yonkers today was initially inhabited by Algonquin, Mohegan and Manhattes tribes of Native Americans. But during the 1640s, the Dutch East India Company gave a grant of 24,000 acres of land to Adriaen Van der Donck, who owing to his status in Holland, was called Jonk Herr, which means young nobleman or young gentleman. The phrase “Jonk Herr” underwent several changes over the years to become Yonkers, the city’s name. It could be said that Van deer Donck started the development of this land with the construction of a saw mill at the Hudson and Nepperhan Rivers’ junction.
However, in 1664, New Netherlands, which was the name of the region where Colen-Donck was located, was renamed New York by the English after obtaining the title to the region. When Van deer Donck died, his wife sold the land, in parts, in 1667. Frederick Philipse acquired a large portion of the land in 1672 and constructed the early part of Philipsburg Manor in 1682, which is today referred to as downtown Yonkers. Philipse Manor Hall, as it is known today, was used as the city’s seat of the government.
Philipse III lost Philipsburg Manor after the Revolutionary War, owing to the fact that the British lost claim to the land. Under New York State Law, the land was divided and sold. In 1788, 16 counties were created from New York State, with Yonkers being one of the towns that made up Westchester County. Yonkers was officially raised to town status in 1790. The construction of the first railroad station in 1848, as well as other improvements made in water and land travel in the area, helped to increase trade and create more employment opportunities in Yonkers. Inventors began to move into the area.
During the 1700s, Yonkers was still a a quiet farm town. But with the passage of time, it developed into a major trading center. Saw mills and grist mills were built. Shop owners including taverns and blacksmith began to establish business in the area.

Yonkers has developed a diversified economy, with many sectors making significant contributions. Yonkers is the gateway to Hudson Valley and New York City. In the recent years, the city has made significant investments in its public schools, contributing to the schools’ high rank in Westchester County.
The film industry is worth singling out among the various types of industries in the city. A number of factors, such as the diverse landscape, location along the Hudson River and proximity to the main transportation thoroughfares contribute to making the city a nice location not just for cinema, but for the television industry. Untermyer Park
From the 1920s to the 1930s, Untermyer Park was once one of the most highly-praised gardens in the world. Spanning 150 acres, Untermyer Park offers impressive views of the Hudson River. Before the 1970s, the park housed temples, fountains, functioning greenhouses, a sundial, that was the only “living” sundial in the world, and Italian imported gardens. But occultic gatherings and rituals that took place in the park dented its image and reputation. However, effort is being made to restore the lost glory of the park. Thus, in 2011, the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy was setup. Many visitors come to the garden on yearly basis. Its major entrance is located at the south of St. John’s Hospital on the North Broadway.
