History

Naperville’s history began in 1831 with the arrival of Joseph Naper at the west bank of the DuPage River . Together with his family and friends, he established what would be known as Naper’s Settlement. They arrived in a schooner called “The Telegraph” with other families, several of which remained in the settlement that would become Chicago. By 1832, over one hundred settlers arrived at Naper’s Settlement. Fort Payne was built to protect the city from the possible attacks of Sauk tribe, which never took place. In 1834, the Pre-Emption House was established due to the increasing importance of the settlement as a stagecoach stop between Chicago and Galena. Incorporation of the settlement into a village took place in 1857, at which time the population was 2,000. From 1864, Naperville was a part of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which eventually played a significant role in the development of the community. In 1890, Naperville was organized as a city and had a population of 2,629. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, Naperville residents began receiving city services such as electricity, telephone, water and sewer. As of 1960, Naperville had a population of 12,933. However, Naperville had been comprised mostly of rural areas until the 1960s and did not see any significant increase in the number of residents. Only afterwards, with the establishment of East-West toll road and Interstate 355, did Naperville experience a population and an economic boom, as the city had an inroad to downtown Chicago. Following these developments, industrial, retail, residential and service industries boomed in and around Naperville. In the 2000s, nearly 130,000 residents called Naperville home. Construction of the Riverwalk in the early 1980s resulted in revitalization of the downtown area. Today it is one of the iconic places of Naperville where residents can enjoy acres of park and paths.
