Conroe, Texas

Conroe is the county seat for Montgomery, Texas. The city was incorporated in 1904 and has a current population of more than 82,000.

Brief History

Isaac Conroe, a Houston lumberman and union calvary officer established a small sawmill in Conroe in 1881. The city, which derives its name from this man, grew fast as a result of the oil and lumber industries. Initially, people used to call the area “Conroe’s Switch”, and many migrated into the area towards the end of the 19th Century. The city’s growth proceeded slowly but steadily, until the period between 2005 and 2007 when its construction industry exploded.

Economy

The city’s economy heavily depends on health, transportation, manufacturing, tourism, construction, education, housing and commerce. The Conroe Park North has managed to attract a lot of industrial activity and retail development, as an industrial park.

The U.S Census Bureau puts the city under the “large urbanized transit area” category. The streets are highly connected, making movement of people and flow of goods around the city easy. Established in 2015, the Conroe Connection bus system serves the public, between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm during business days.

Some of the top employers in the city include Conroe Independent School District, City of Conroe, Conroe Regional Medical Center and Montgomery County. ExxonMobil ended plans to consolidate its workers somewhere in Conroe in 1980’s, when the local oil industry collapsed.
