Gainesville, Texas

The city of Gainesville is the county seat of Cooke County. It is one of the towns in the Texoma region. Gainesville’s population as of the 2010 census was at 16,002.  The official website of the city describes it as ‘Totally Texas. All American”.Gainesville factoring company

History

The city was founded in 1850 on a 40-acre piece of land that donated by Mary E. Clark. The residents named their new city Liberty, but that did not last long as there was already another city in Texas that had the same name. Colonel William Fitzhugh, a settler of the county provided an alternative name. He felt that the city should be named after General Edmund Pendleton Gaines. Fitzhugh had served under Gaines, and he admired the general who was a sympathizer with the Texas Revolution.

In September 1858, the Butterfield Overland Mail Stagecoach made its way into the region and brought with it expectations of prosperity. The stagecoach delivered freight, passengers, and mail to the residents of Gainesville. One occurrence that brought negativity to Gainesville in those early days was the Great Hanging at Gainesville which saw 40 suspected Union loyalists tried in a hearing charged with controversy and subsequently hanged. The new town attracted the state’s attention as a result, and it almost brought division within Cooke County.

The decade that followed the end of the civil war ushered in a period of extended growth in Gainesville. For starters, the cattle industry in Texas expanded and Gainesville benefited by becoming the supply point for cowboys headed for Kansas with their herds. Its merchants were glad for these cattle drives because their gains improved considerably. In twenty years, the population had risen from a few hundred to more than twenty residents.

The Growth of Gainesville

The city was incorporated on February 17, 1873. In a few more years, it grew into a commercial and shipping point for the farmers and ranchers that resided therein. In 1875, a sales agent for Joseph Glidden’s Bar Fence Company located in DeKalb, Illinois, traveled to Texas. His name was Henry B. Sanborn. His first visit to Gainesville saw him sell ten reels of barbed wire to the Cleaves and Fletcher hardware store. This was the first sale of barbed wire in the region.

World War II had a significant impact on the county. An army infantry training camp called Camp Howze was constructed in the area on some of the best farmlands in Cooke County. This establishment had a positive impact on the residents and the county in general because it helped ease the effects of the Great Depression by providing employment. As a result, more people moved into the county, and the population doubled.

Economy

Gainesville is a popular destination for tourists, and this has brought a fresh dose of prosperity in the region. Since then, tourism has brought renewed prosperity to the area. Amtrak made its comeback in the Gainesville and propelled the city to more economic growth. The city had approximately 600 businesses in the early 90s.

Zodiac Seats U.S (ZSUS) has its headquarters in Gainesville. The company was founded in 1968 and was known as Weber Aircraft, LLC, but later on became a division of Groupe Zodiac Aerospace which is located in Plaisir, France. The company holds several patents for products invented by their employees and is also the largest manufacturer of airline seats in the world.

The Winstar World Casino is very close to Gainesville. Many forms of gambling are not legal in Texas, but due to its proximity to the facility, Gainesville is said to indulge. The casino is considered the largest in the world. It contains:

  • Two Hotel Towers
  • A Global Events Center
  • An 18-Hole Golf Course

Climate

The weather in Gainesville is sunny in common with the rest of Texas, but the region has experienced a few natural disasters. On June 18, 2007, a series of thunderstorms roared through the city and the neighboring town of Sherman resulting in heavy flooding.
