Current Active Drilling Rigs – January 2024

Over the past month, oil prices have trended up. Prices closed at $75.57 on December 26th. On January 2nd, prices hit a low of $70.38. From there, prices have risen to a high of $78.01 on January 26th.

The January 26th Baker Hughes rig count report shows a continuing decline in the active rig count. Baker Hughes reports 621 active drilling rigs in the US. One month ago, the total active rig count was 620. One year ago, the total active rig count was 771.

The oil rig count is currently 499 rigs, compared to 498 one month ago and 609 one year ago. The gas rig count is 119, compared to 120 one month ago and 160 last January.

In the major plays, the Permian Basin rig count is at 310 rigs, up 3 from the December count.

In east Texas, the Eagle Ford has 54 active rigs, the same as in December.

The Haynesville rig count is 42 rigs, 2 less than last month.

The Anadarko rig count is 42 rigs, down 2 from December.

The active rig count in the Niobrara is 27 rigs, down 4 from last month.

The Williston Basin rig count is 34 rigs, up 2 from December.

The Appalachian has 41 active rigs, up one from the December count.
