What You Need to Know About The Electronic Logging Device Rule

Safety for truck drivers is always a relevant topic. The electronic logging device rule, also known as ELD rule, is designed to help improve safety for all drivers. It is also intended to make it easier and faster to accurately track and manage records of duty status (RODS) data by syncing with the truck engine to track driving time without any manual effort.

The ELD rule applies to most companies and drivers that are required to maintain RODS. The deadline for the rule is December 18, 2017.

If you’re currently using automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs), the ELD rule will replace AOBRDs during a four-year implementation period, with a deadline of December 16, 2019.

According to the FMSCA website, here are the specifics of the ELD rule:

  • Specifies who is covered by the rule and exceptions to it.
  • Provides for ELDS to be certified, registered, and listed on an FMCSA website.
  • Includes technical specifications to ensure ELDs are standardized and compliant.
  • Includes a phased implementation timeline to give drivers and carriers time to comply.
  • Includes provisions to help prevent data tampering and harassment of drivers.
  • Creates standard data displays and data transfer processes, making it easier to demonstrate compliance and faster to share RODS with safety officials.

*All information is according to the FMSCA website which was last updated December 22, 2016. Please be sure to check the website for any updates and/or changes to the rule*
