Moreno Valley

Moreno Valley is located in Riverside County, California. According to the 2010 census report, Moreno Valley had a population of about 193,365 people. Although people have lived here for many centuries, Moreno Valley wasn’t declared a city until about 30 years ago, following rapid population growth. The creation of a military base in the area also led to massive expansion of the city and is believed to have given birth to the modern city of Moreno Valley.

History

It is a valley with over 190 pre-historic archaeological locations and was first inhabited 2,300 years ago. In 1850, when California was admitted as one of the states, many Americans settled in the area, including the engineer, Frank R. Brown. He brought many opportunities through his numerous land activities. One of the most notable ones was the start of his water company, which supplied water to the entire valley.

In 1984, Moreno Valley was declared a city and consisted mainly of three communities: Sunnymead, Edgemont and Moreno. Engineer Frank R. Brown is the namesake of Moreno. In fact, Moreno is a Spanish word for brown. He built the first water pipes in the area in 1891 to help supply the residents with water to grow fruits. They grew a variety of fruits, including grapes, citrus and much more. Unfortunately, this project did not last long. The water from the bear valley dried following a severe drought, and squabbling over ownership resulted in the filing of cases over water rights. Nevertheless, the area remained active for many years while growth continued, it was referred to as the “City on Wheels,” since there were many steam-powered tractors, which were hauling homes into the area.

In 1918, the US Air Force constructed a March Field in the area, which was used to train pilots. The presence of the March Field led to rapid expansion and growth of the area. The field was used to train military pilots who served in World War II. In 1927, the March Field was made a full airbase, and later in 1996, it was made a joint Air Reserve Base.

In 1957, an International Raceway was developed, and it operated between 1957 and 1989. It hosted various raceways, including IMSA, NHRA drag racing, AMA motorcycle racing, Indy car, and NASCAR.

Moreno Valley experienced an unprecedented population explosion between 1980 and 1984. The explosion fueled an economic boom in the area and led to the building of new homes and new businesses. The expansion moved for incorporation, and in 1984, it was incorporated into a city and was allowed to elect its first city council officials. By 1990, it experienced a further population explosion, which made it Riverside County’s second largest city. By then, it had a population of about 118,000 people.

Community Services and Parks

Moreno Valley is known to offer residents and visitors many recreational and leisure activities. Residents and visitors are free to engage in a myriad of activities, such as playing golf, swimming, and relaxing in the numerous parks in the area. The parks host the Running Man Challenge with the objective to demonstrate how these parks play a critical role in making the lives of its residents and visitors better. Also, the city has great facilities designed to host events. There are conferences and recreational centers, which host weddings, family gatherings as well as business meetings and events.

World Logistics Center

Upon completion, the center will once again put Moreno Valley on the global economic map. The center is designed to support the emerging needs of global companies and will feature innovative architecture and advanced technologies. The plan for the center has already been approved and establishes the future vision of the land located between the West Gilman Springs Road, south of Moreno Valley and east of Redlands Boulevard. The campus will be situated on 2,610 acres of land and will incorporate the highest environmental standards. Moreno Valley is strategically located and is just an hour’s drive away from many major markets, making it an ideal location for The World Logistics Center. It will serve 11 western states and will be accessible to over 200 million clients.

Lake Perris

Lake Perris is a major recreational area in Moreno Valley. Although its surroundings appear to be dangerously rocky, it remains an attraction that is highly sought after by both residents and visitors to Moreno Valley. A variety of birds and wildlife live in the nearby coastal sage scrub. The untended areas of the lake are home to numerous wildlife such as rattlesnakes, jackrabbits, roadrunners, gophers snakes, coyotes, mule deer, and others. Beautiful wildflowers dominate the areas around the lake from November to April and make the place more attractive. The lake is surrounded by mountains and hills with animals and plants, which have adapted themselves to the warm and dry environment.

The Olive Mountain

It is one of the places in Moreno Valley that gives hikers their greatest challenge, with an ascent of almost 700 feet. In fact, it is said to be one of the best hiking trails in Moreno Valley. It can be accessed via Olive Hill, one of the public hiking areas maintained by the city, which gives climbers a chance to traverse past many boulders before ending up at the summit of Olive Mountain.
