Hollywood, Florida

Hollywood is a coastal city full of sunshine, home to over 140,000 people and is located in Broward County, Florida. Hollywood is between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, with a distance of around 20 miles from Miami and 10 miles from Fort Lauderdale. The nearest airport that connects the city with the rest of the world is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Port Everglades, the second busiest cruise port in the world, is also covered under its municipal boundaries. The Port of Miami is less than 25 miles away and provides access to the global marketplace for Hollywood residents and companies.

Founded in 1925 by Josef Young, this beautiful coastal city is over 90 years old. Hollywood has transformed drastically from its initial incorporation by municipal charter on November 28, 1925. Transformed from an undeveloped tract of pine forests, palmetto plants, giant tomato farms and low-lying marshland, it has become the second-most dense and happening city in Broward County and the ninth largest city in the state of Florida.

Hollywood was a dream project for Josef Young. He planned the entire project to bring his vision to reality with the city of Hollywood. With the formation of the Hollywood Land and Water Company, composed of 26 departments covering every aspect of city building, Young made his dreams into reality. Young had skills to successfully attract numerous potential Hollywood residents to visit and eventually purchase property.

Unique to Hollywood is also the location of the Seminole Indian Reservation, a politically-independent entity. Hollywood was the site of the “Pageant of the Unconquered Seminoles” in 1971 that attracted Native Americans from across the United States.

In 1975 while celebrating its 50th anniversary, Hollywood adopted the nickname the “Diamond of the Gold Coast.” It was the year that Young’s “Dream City” had grown to a size of 125,400 people.

Hollywood is a top choice for families of young kids, providing quality education through all levels. It is home to 32 public and charter elementary, middle and high schools. Students take advantage of the wide range of award-winning magnet programs, including: S.T.E.M., the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate (AICE), communication and broadcasting, military academy, health and wellness, Montessori and several others. Hollywood is also home to nationally-renowned higher learning institutions such as Barry University and Nova Southeastern University. The region is served by a substantial post-secondary educational infrastructure, including Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, the University of Miami, a number of smaller private universities and colleges and a community college system.

The opening of the Anne Kolb Nature Center located in Hollywood’s West Lake Tract has continued to add luster to its reputation as the Diamond of the Gold Coast. The center of Hollywood is perfectly developed for nature lovers because of its over 1,500 acres of mangrove preserves. It also preserves a site of protected bird rookery and sanctuary, as well as a fish nursery ground. The North Beach has gained a recognition as a sea turtle hatchery. The historic downtown arts district along Harrison Street and the Hollywood Art & Culture Center have become centers of attraction for cultural arts and entertainment lovers.

Things to Do

Hollywood Hot Glass

Downtown Hollywood is artistic in many ways. It is home to the centuries-old tradition of glassblowing at the Arts Park. Every Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m the master glassblowers perform live demonstrations in the glassblowing studio. It is a fascinating show and people of all ages enjoy it. Sit comfortably in the theater-style viewing area and watch the glassblowers create vessels and sculptures from molten glass that is over 2,000 degrees.

Bicycle & Jet Ski Rentals

Beaches of Florida are to meant for enjoying sun and tides. Rent a bicycle for the hour, day or week and enjoy a scenic ride along the newly-renovated oceanfront. Broadwalk is Hollywood’s 2.5 mile pedestrian promenade framed by charming cafes, restaurants and shops, as well as boutique hotels, resorts and quaint seaside inns and bed and breakfasts. If you prefer water over land, rent a jet ski and enjoy the beautiful blue water.

Topeekeegee Yugnee Park

This water park is a great place to bring your family. It is not only for your children, but also a place to bring your pets. You can either choose to have a nice family BBQ or just enjoy the rides with your family. It can also be a perfect outdoor place to have a birthday party. Topeekeegee Yugnee Park also has a playground for kids. All you can imagine in this water park is having a blast.

What is next for Hollywood? While buildings and roads and infrastructure are important, the real future of Hollywood lies with its new generations that will mature to lead the city to even greater heights barely imaginable by Joseph Young in 1925. As important as our history might be, the past is merely prologue to the future.
