This city provides a unique mix of big-city amenities and small-town living. Pembroke Pines is one of the main cities within Miami’s metropolitan region. The city is renowned for its livability, high quality of life and its diverse demographic. However, it also provides a tight-knit, communal feel that has proved attractive to families, singles and even senior citizens.

Pembroke Pines is well known for its balmy climate, lush landscape and limitless opportunities for recreation and entertainment. Because of this, the city has won numerous awards and accolades. These include being listed as Florida’s “Best Place to Raise Your Kids,” one of South Florida’s “Most Integrated Communities” and an “All American City.”

History

It is believed that the area that is now Pembroke Pines was first inhabited by Native Americans more than 4,000 years ago. However, the city as we know it today can trace the origins of its name back to Sir Edward Reed, a British Member of Parliament. In the 1880s, Reed first bought and farmed land in the area that is now near Dania Beach. A road that passed through this land was soon after named Pembroke Road. It is believed that this road influenced the city’s name during its incorporation in 1960.

Pembroke Pines started out as an agricultural town. After the Second World War, retired army personnel came to the area and began dairy farming. One of the first homes in this town was built in 1956 in the new subdivision called the Village of Pembroke Pines. Its status as a village was confirmed in 1959, which was before the area was incorporated as a city.

During its early years, Pembroke Pines was less than a square-mile expanse between 72nd Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Residents organized themselves into the Pembroke Pines Civic Association in order to drive the further development of the area.

However, their efforts at expansion to the south, east and north were hampered by the South Florida State Hospital and North Perry Airport. Developer Joseph LaCroix came to the rescue by allowing his 320-acre piece of land to be annexed to the city. This allowed Pembroke Pines to finally begin developing westward.

After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Pembroke Pines’ population experienced massive growth. Many people moved from Miami-Dade County to Broward County. Throughout the 1990s a significant portion of people had found their way to Pembroke Pines in this manner. The resultant population boom also caused this city to be ranked third in America’s “Fastest Growing Cities” 1999 listing.

Economy

Pembroke Pines started out as a major agricultural city, with a focus on dairy farming. However, people have branched out in recent years to bring a variety of industries to the forefront. Today, a small percentage of the city’s population still cultivates the land; however, the backbone of Pembroke Pines’ economy is built on retail, professional services, finance, transportation and logistics, wholesaling and warehousing and IT.

The rate of new job creation in Pembroke Pines is among the highest in the entire state of Florida. This influences how people live in this city, providing quite a high standard of life for area residents. The median income for households in Pembroke Pines is $60,000. Affordable housing is also ensured, attracting even more people to live here. As at the end of 2016, the median home price in the city was about $200,000.
