Shreveport is a city in Caddo and Bossier parishes. With a population of 199,311 (as of 2010), it is the 113th largest city in the country and the third largest city in Louisiana. The city has two airports, media houses, recreation and sport facilities, attractions of different kinds, offerings of any modern city and overlooks the Red River. Greater Shreveport is comprised of a diverse set of neighborhoods.
The Shreveport area was initially occupied by the Caddo Indian tribe, who were largely decimated by series of epidemics that occurred when the European missionaries first arrived. Modern Shreveport was established in part by Henry Miller Shreve, the city’s namesake. He was a steamboat captain that famously cleared the Great Raft of Red River in 1833, so that boats could sail from Loggy Bayou to Hurricane. The clearing of the area resulted in increased commercial activities.
On May 27, 1836, the Shreve Town Company was established. These investors thought that with the establishment of a real estate brokerage firm, they would tap in the advantages of the growing commercial opportunities afforded by the proximity to the river. Shreve Town Company was tasked with establishing a community at the intersection of the Red River and the Texas Trail. They called it Shreveport. The community was later incorporated as a town and a city in 1871 and 1939, respectively.
The community became a hub for cotton and steamboats, thanks to its strategic location on the Red River. The increase in commercial activities resulted in population growth. With industrialization, Shreveport adapted to railroad transportation in the late 19th century, as riverboats were no longer the major means of transportation.
With its large number of students, it is easy to see why Shreveport has a youthful vibrancy, and a thriving entertainment industry. Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and Shreveport Opera have all it takes to satisfy the requirements of any classic music lover. Not to worry, there are music venues where you can enjoy other genres of music. A number of resort hotels in this city have casinos. They also offer additional facilities and services such as accommodations, health spas, gyms and exercise facilities and fine dining.
There are a variety of nightlife activities in Shreveport. There are nightclubs that offer all night music, and casinos that remain open until daybreak. Eldorado Casino’s Celebrity Lounge is a good location for gamblers. It also offers music as well. Local and national comedians are always at their best from Wednesday to Saturday at The Funny Bone.
Shreveport has strong culinary heritage. There are a lot of restaurants serving local dishes. If you are a foodie, there is a place for you in this city. It is home to a leading cancer treatment facility in the South, namely, Christus Schumpert Medical Center. It is also home to Shriners Hospital for Children, which was the first children’s hospital in the US, founded in 1922.
At one time the city had a booming oil and gas industry. Nowadays, the primary industries in the city include gaming, entertainment, shopping and retail and the automobile industry. Shreveport also has a high-performing transportation industry, including service from two airports. The city also has a good education sector, comprised of both public and private institutions.
Shreveport is nicknamed “the Hollywood of the South.” The State of Louisiana is regarded as the third largest film industry in the country, thanks to tax incentives from the city. Some of its facilities for filmmaking include the Louisiana Wave Studio, Fairgrounds Complex, prop rental facilities and sound stages. A lot of movies have been shot in this city.
