Colorado encompasses most of the southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains.

Colorado is the 8th most extensive and the 22nd most populous of the 50 states. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population is approximately 5.4 million. Denver, the state capital, has about 650,000 residents.

The state was named for the Colorado River, which Spanish travelers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy silt the river carried from the mountains. The territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state.

Colorado is nicknamed the “Centennial State” because it became a state in the same year as the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages the 42 state parks and 307 wildlife areas. The state is home to more than 400 species of birds. Fisheries management predates all other wildlife management activities in Colorado. Fish hatchery technicians are responsible for the aquaculture of 56 separate strains of fish, and raise and stock over 90 million fish each year. Big game hunting is also popular in Colorado with species that include deer, elk, pronghorn, sheep, goats, bear, and moose.

Top industries are mostly in agriculture which contributes over $7 billion to the state’s economy. These include cattle, wheat, marijuana, dairy, corn, and hay. Cattle and calves are Colorado’s number one livestock product with 2.6 million head of cattle in the state. Colorado dairy industry produces more than 2.5 billion pounds of milk.  Colorado also produces more than 100 million pounds of pinto beans.

Other significant industries include scientific research and high-tech industries.

Some of the state’s top employers include USAA, Edward Jones, Physician Health Partners, Renewal by Anderson Colorado, and LIVE Urban Real Estate.

Some larger companies include Denver International Airport, University of Colorado – Boulder, Lockheed Martin, Peterson AFB, Colorado State University, and Western Union.

Colorado also holds the largest rodeo in the nation as well as the largest mineral hot springs pool in Glenwood Springs.

The state’s climate has a variety of seasons that allows for numerous outdoor activities seasonally dependent as well as personal choice. Some of these outdoor activities include skiing, snowboarding, hiking, camping in the mountains, horseback riding, ranching, rafting, boating, and golfing.
