History
Before Junipero Serra and his men came to the area known today as Orange, it was inhabited by Native American tribes of Tonga, Juaneno, and Luiseno. The expedition called the area Valle de Santa Ana in Spanish, which means the Valley of Saint Anne. Mission San Juan Capistrano was established in the area on November 1, 1776. The mission became the first permanent European settlement. Land grants, namely, Rancho Los Nietos and Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, were respectively given to Jose Manuel Nieto and Jose Antonio Yorba. These men were among those who came for the exploration. Heirs of these two Spanish explorers also received land grants in 1834. During the Mexican era in Alta California, the Mexican Government gave out land grants to other people in Orange County. Various communities emerged from these ranches.
Cattle ranching was prevalent in that era. However, during the 1860s, the industry began to decline as a result of severe drought. Due to the discovery of silver in the Santa Ana Mountains in 1887, more people moved to the area from Santa Fe by means of the Southern Pacific Railroad. With the population of the area increasing, buildings were constructed and became numerous. The California legislature thought it wise to carve out Orange County from Los Angeles County in March of 1889. The newly-created county was named Orange County in order to attract more settlers, as it created the impression that the area was a semi-tropical area where any crop could be farmed. During this initial time, the economy of the county was driven by agriculture, with citrus and avocados constituting the major crops. Oil extraction also thrived at this time.
The construction of the Pacific Electric Railway in 1904 facilitated the development of the county. It connected Santa Ana, the capital city of Orange County, to Los Angeles and Newport Beach. Many Hollywood stars began to spend their weekends in Orange County because it could be accessed easily. Orange County continued to witness economic and infrastructural development, even after World War II when agriculture was no longer the mainstay of its economy. Many job seekers that came to California to work in the various manufacturing companies and in aerospace settled in Orange County. Interstate 5 made travel easy for these newcomers. Disneyland opened in 1955, which brought Orange County into an even brighter spotlight.
The county has grown in population, becoming the second-largest county in the state in terms of population. The 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon, came from this county.
