Georgia
Georgia has the eighth largest state population in the United States with more than 10 million residents. Its state capital, Atlanta, has the largest city population of about 443,000 people. Other top cities based on population in the “Empire State of the South,” include Augusta-Richmond, Columbus, Northeast Cobb, Savannah, and Athens-Clarke.
Georgia has a diverse terrain including lakes, rivers, and mountains. Because of the various altitudes and the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, the climate varies by region. In the mountains north of Atlanta, the climate is colder than anywhere else in the state. However, most of the state has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers.

Agricultural is one of the state’s top economic industries. It’s the leading producer of peaches giving it its nickname of the “Peach State.” Georgia is also the largest producer of peanuts and pecans in the United States. Other common crops grown and harvested here include cotton, apples, tobacco, corn, soybeans, grain, watermelon, and sweet potatoes. Livestock is also a big part of its agriculture industry including eggs, cattle, hogs, and milk.
Other major industries in the state include manufacturing, mining, energy, automotive, and tourism.
Manufacturing makes many of the agricultural items worth more in the state. For example, cotton harvested in Georgia is made into cotton clothing. Many processed foods and beverages are also manufactured here. One of the top employers is Coca-Cola with its headquarters located in Atlanta.
Mining and energy is another prosperous industry. The state is the top producer of clay and kaolin. Several types of stone are also quarried here including crushed stone, building stone, gravel, marble, and limestone.
The southeast section of the United States is known as “Automotive Alley” and Georgia is a big part of it. According to the state’s website, more than 20 percent of all East Coast automotive-related exports leave Georgia’s ports.
Attractions & Entertainment
