Southwestern Energy

Southwestern Energy, which is headquartered in Houston, Texas and has offices in Conway, Arkansas, is an American petroleum company that has been providing energy for decades. The company has its roots in the Southern Union Gas Company of Dallas, having started as a subsidiary of the company on July 2, 1929. The subsidiary was named Arkansas Western Gas Company (AWG).

Arkansas Western Gas Company became an independent utility operation in 1940 and began a drilling program. The company completed its first discovery well in the White Oak Field in Franklin County, Arkansas on May 14, 1943, with transmission and distribution lines serving the Harrison, Arkansas district.

Arkansas Western Production Company changed its name to Southwestern Energy Production Company (SEPCO) in 1980 and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1981. Southwestern Energy has a program in place that allows interested parties to purchase the company’s shares directly from the company without the need of a broker.

Southwestern Energy is a growing independent energy company, primarily engaged in natural gas and crude oil exploration, development and production. The company produces natural gas from more than 1.5 million acres of land located in the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and in the Fayetteville Shale in Arkansas.

Southwestern Energy is committed to discovering new, innovative ways to fuel the future. The company’s focus is the development of natural gas in the Fayetteville Shale in Arkansas, the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania and the exploration of oil and natural gas in other new ventures in North America.

The company’s mandate goes beyond providing energy to the American people, and is committed to empowering communities in areas such as taking care of the environment and improving the quality of life through education and disaster relief.

Besides natural gas production, Southwestern Energy focuses on creating and capturing additional value through the natural gas gathering and marketing businesses in its midstream services segment, which generates revenue by transporting natural gas to the market and through marketing Southwestern Energy’s own gas production, as well as some third party natural gas.

Leadership and Business Model

Southwestern Energy embodies strong leadership.  Harold Korell was the company’s Chief Executive Officer until he retired in 2009. Steven L. Mueller took over from 2009 until 2016, when he retired and was replaced by William J. Way.

The president is part of an executive leadership team made up of different categories of vice presidents in charge of various departments, such as corporate development, administration, marketing and transportation and tax and treasury.

Southwestern Energy is built on a formula that came up as a result of a brainstorming session held by the management team in 1999, a time considered one of the darkest in the company’s history.

Southwestern Energy’s business model revolves around putting people first. The right people are innovative, creative and hardworking. It is they who know right from wrong and can do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done. Having the people who are competent to perform the technical work when it is needed, combined with the focus on areas where Southwestern Energy has competitive advantages.

Exploring, drilling and producing natural gas is complex and highly technical, and requires skilled manpower. Southwestern Energy is steered by a team of skilled employees who combine innovative technology and expertise to explore and produce natural gas reserves within the ground and deliver them to business, residential and industrial users.

Southwestern Energy, currently the third-largest producer of natural gas in United States, is committed to giving the American people value through continuous innovation and working with the right people. The company is focused on growing beyond the current capacity to new ventures that will enrich the lives of communities.
